Ciao Italia: Getting inspired in Venice

If you haven’t seen it yet, we have introduced a new segment in our BAS Life magazine, all about Italian travels. Earlier this year we visited Venice and what a treat it was!

Venice is well worth a visit, not only because it may be sinking, but because it’s like stepping out in another world. It is truly magical, and a city that you can get lost in and explore. We visited the city in February when tourism is lower, which we highly recommend to avoid the people.

BUT with this you get the rain. We were only there for 2 nights so could only fit in a certain amount of activities. Had we had extra days, we would have definitely visited some of the art museums dotted around including The Guggenheim.

Here are some of our recommendations…

What to see

Boat trip to Burano. Even in the rain this little island about 30 minute boat ride away from Venice, is a rainbow dream. It’s beautiful to meander and look at all the colourful houses and imagine which one you would live in!

Eat & Drink

Osteria Enoteca Ai Artisti

Perfect spot, a little off the beaten track this beautiful restaurant has an array of locally sourced food, with an emphasis of the food of the lagoon. Features a lot of yummy fish dishes.

Osteria Al Squero

Cichetti are famous in Venice, and eaten as a small lunch or ‘aperitivo’ snack. Best described as bread with a delicious toppings, they come with all different toppings, and the perfect mouthful to go with your Aperol – which of course is from Venice. Try the Venetian version on an Aperol using ‘Select’ as your bitters alternative. We highly recommend this great little bar opposite the gondola workshop. Sip your spritz, eat your chichetti and watch the gondolas at work!

Experience the Venetian culture with mask-making

We kept away from the classic experiences of Venice like a Gondola ride, and chose instead to partake in a mask making workshop as a nod to the famous Venetian carnival that takes place in February. Just as well because it rained a lot whilst we were there and it was good to sit inside but still take in the famous Venetian culture.

Sleep

As there were 5 of us, we opted for an apartment for our accommodation. We found an apartment through Venice Apartment: Venice Vacation Rentals – Something we might do for the next time is look for an apartment more in the Jewish quarter of Venice, which is a little away from the main square and the tourists!

Until next time.. Ciao from Italia!
