The backstory of JobsWorth podcast with Clio, the BAS founder

Last month I was invited on JobsWorth’s podcast where I talk to its host, John Hawker, about my journey from Genoa to Jewellery. We chatted about my Italian roots, childhood dreams of becoming an Olympian, navigating a corporate world, how I started Black & Sigi with my sister Athena, community building and much more.

Here is little bit more about how it came about and my experience of being on a podcast after a very long break…

The podcast invitation

It turned out that although I didn’t know John directly, we had a few people in common, and a few of them had suggested Black and Sigi as a potential guest on the podcast when he was putting together a list of the creative small business in Leigh/ Westcliff for series 2.

John is charismatic and asked some great questions to really delve into everyone’s job history to create a great story about each and every guest. He is a tech recruiter by profession, but what a great medium he has created to collaborate with people who he might otherwise never have worked with! I personally find it fascinating how people get to where they are today so I really enjoyed the whole series.

The preparation

This is our 3rd podcast, but I haven’t done one in a few years so it felt like my first one! I prepared by first listening to all the previous guests he had on so I could understand what type of questions he was going to ask. I then just had a proper think about what my own journey was.

In hindsight, I should have really written things down and taken in notes because once you are in front of that microphone you forget everything!!!! I missed out many things which was annoying!!

The experience

I was nervous about the podcast all the way until the day, then John was super chilled so made it very easy to get into the whole thing once I was there. It was only a day after that I completely freaked out about it, about missing stuff out and the fear of not being very interesting. Poor John had 3000 messages from me, and must have thought I was insane!!! But it all turned out okay in the end! I suppose that was the imposter syndrome coming into play!

The main thing that we wanted to communicate about BAS is that we have got to where we are because of the collaborations and connections we have made with customers and the community. It’s an important part of our DNA and is something that we have built on. Of course, there are other aspects of the business and our journey, but I think that this is the closest to our hearts.

Podcast as marketing

Podcasts are a different form of marketing to say social media. Where one is quick and visually driven, podcasts offer a medium where the listener is more invested in as it is slower and a longer format. Not only this it allows to expand on the story, Jobsworth podcast was a great platform for us to share the story of how we got here, and what life events took us down the path of Black and Sigi, stories that you might not otherwise get in the immediate marketing. So in terms of importance, it’s up there as it allows to expand on the stories of the person and brand.

Go and have a listen if you want to know more about what I wanted to be when I was growing up, what was the thing that made me feel different when I first joined my new school in England and how Athena, the OG BAS founder is still very much part of the Black and Sigi story.

Love,
