December snow dusted the small town of Chalkwell, settling on cockle shed roofs, tree branches and cobbled streets. Inside her cozy fishermen’s cottage, Frances Gardner was getting ready for the holiday season, a time she cherished since she was a little girl. The warmth of tradition always softened the cold of winter, and this year, she wanted to make it memorable.
On her dressing table, she laid out a series of jewels she only brought out on special occasions. In her mind, Christmas was about looking and feeling radiant, celebrating love and light. She reached out for the glistening druzy necklace, savouring its natural shape. The mirror reflected a soft glow as she put it on, her cheeks rosy from the sparkling wine she had treated herself too.
Frances moved onto her hair, pinning each red curl carefully. Once her hair was a cascade of soft, structured waves, she pulled on a festive jumper with a touch of sparkle weaved throughout. She admired her look, feeling that old fashioned Christmas magic settling around her.
In her kitchen, she prepared for a quiet afternoon coffee with her mother and sister, Lillian. She brewed a pot of her Christmas coffee blend, filling the air with a blend of vanilla, cocoa and a hint of spice. Frances carefully set the table using her grandmothers fine china and small plates for the sugar dusted biscuits shed baked the night before.
The ladies gathered around the table and reminisced of Christmas pasts. The simplicity of coffee and biscuits and conversation made Frances feel grateful.
As Frances walked home, she felt blessed for the simple joys – moments of self care, family, laughter over hot drinks, and a good cocktail with friends. Christmas she realised was not just about the festivities, but the glow they bought to her heart.
